scars for happiness

12/30/12 , , , , , , , ,

It’s so hard to forget pain, but it’s even harder to remember sweetness. We have no scar to show for happiness.

love this line by chuck palahniuk (of fight club fame).  he wrote it in his novel diary:

“it’s so hard to forget pain, but it’s even harder to remember sweetness”: it comes too natural for us to hold on to our grief/pain.  by comparison, happiness seems more elusive and forgettable.  if only we held on to our joy with the same fervor that some people hold on to their grudges…

“We have no scar to show for happiness”: great imagery that builds on the first line.  yeah, pain can leave imprints (physical ones but sometimes also emotional and psychological ones) but happiness can too, again if we let it.  being able to trace your past moments of bliss when the present seems light on them is like sunshine on a cloudy day *david ruffin voice*.

think about some of your “happiness scars” and make sure you don’t let them fade away.

That’s a nice thought. I want to practice remembering more the sweetness rather than the pain
