the integer called bleen

Bleen-blog480

new brain teaser via wordplay:

I have visited middle school and high school classes, proposed this challenge, and was surprised at the variety of results. The challenge forces one to go back to the number line to understand how the insertion of this new integer affects counting.

The idea originated with comedian George Carlin several decades ago — probably in the 1970s — when he announced that a new integer had been discovered by mathematicians.

The Integer Called Bleen

Suppose that a “new integer” is “discovered” between 5 and 6 called bleen, written as a capital B. That is, counting fingers, one says, “one, two, three, four, five, bleen, six, seven, eight, nine.” There will be thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, bleenteen, sixteen, etc. Also fifty nine, bleenty, bleenty one, bleenty two, etc.

So, what is bleen plus three? Bleen plus bleen? Ten times bleen? Bleen times bleen?

put your answers to the 4 questions in the comments.  also when you do, talk a bit about how you figured them out.

-B+3, 2*B, B*10, and B-squared

It would make sense in our heads if we simply replaced the number 4 with B, but the math stays the same… as base-11

it looks like you just restated questions. just to clarify, the answers should be integers (write it as a number or word)

note

ahh: 8, 11, 5B, 39

8 and 11 are correct. last two are not.

grrr 8,11,55,33 …. mind melts…

3 out of 4…keep pushing

I now know my next fun coding project – the bleen calculator

Ouch
8,11,60,33
It’s hard to count with bleen when you are not used to bleen!

sorry still 3 out of 4…and yeah, having to count with bleen might be the hardest part

Perhaps you’ll give it away for me. I used this little cheat
111112 b
111111 11
111121 16
111111 22
111211 27
111111 33
112111 38
111111 44
121111 49
111111 55
211111 60
111112 6b

I think that should work, unless there is a trick I missed.
10*B should be 60
If I had 3/4 and changed only one, then the one I changed must still be wrong – but I don’t see how?

yeah the 10*b one was wrong. i worked off of the premise that 10 * an integer x = x0. examples:
10 * 5 = 50
or
10 * 32 = 320.
so then in this case, 10 * b would equal b0 aka bleenty.

GAahahhhh
I worked that Bleen times and still can’t count with Bleen. My cheat chart was right, but I labeled it wrong! That’s a really good problem….

12/09/12

yeah it is. good job, good effort

note

12/10/12

B+3=8
B+B=11
10*B = 55
B*B = 33

B+3=8
B+B= 11
10*B = Bleenty
B*B = 33
