out of the 16 million refugees worldwide displaced for political or religious reasons, about 1% are accepted into the united states.  during their first 90 days in america, resettlement agencies help them to learn english, find jobs and enroll in school.  once the 3 months are up however, the people are on their own so it’s imperative that they become self-sufficient asap.

photographer inge kathleen hooker tells the story of one family’s move from a refugee camp in thailand to life in bowling green, kentucky.  see some of their acclimation experience in her pics below (click for a closer look).
